Right now, in the core of some star, hydrogen is being crushed into helium, helium into carbon, carbon into iron. Burned, forged, changed. One day that star will die and scatter the elements it made back into the universe. Some of it will become the iron in a bloodstream, the calcium in a bone. You are, in the plainest possible sense, made of stars that were consumed.

Consumption is the oldest law there is. One thing takes in another; both are changed; nothing is ever lost. The first law of thermodynamics, lived: energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transformed.

Every atom in your body has been taken in, broken down, and passed along by countless organisms across millions of years. You stay alive by taking in more — food, water, air — drawn from the earth, which drew it from the stars. The whole universe is required to make and sustain one of you. Nothing gained, nothing lost. Only constant change. You are what you eat. And one day every atom you are borrowing now will go back to the earth.

What holds for a body holds for a society. We are what we consume. This world — the earth and everything we have built on it — is the sum of our collective consumptive choices. Climate change is not a visitation. It is a receipt. We buy electricity burned from fossil fuels. We eat meat from animals that never see daylight. And we practically inhale plastic. We made the mess we are in by consuming, and we keep it running the same way, one purchase at a time.

Our society is global, and yet every choice an individual makes ripples through the whole. The butterfly effect, in a system that has become chaotic. If no one bought a ticket to a film depicting violence, the film would not get made — there is no profit in it. If no one bought a car that burns gasoline, those cars would not get built. Every dollar spent shapes tomorrow. That is the Dollar-Vote — the first of the four yardsticks.

The four yardsticks are socio-dynamic in origin and effect. In thermodynamics, the agent of change is heat. In socio-dynamics, it is choice. The choosing and its consequence cannot be pulled apart.

Every waking moment, choices are made. Each one rests on a yardstick — some measure of what we value, as an individual, and as a whole. And here’s the kicker: we also choose the yardstick. The measure we judge by is itself a choice.

Four simple yardsticks, brought to everyday choices, can change how a society works and evolves. No new government. No revolution. Only the heat, applied with purpose.

The four principles of choice, and the yardstick each one carries:

1. The dollar-vote — for the individual. Every purchase is a vote for the world you want to live in.
2. The health of the organism — for manufacturers. The organism is the earth and all the life on it. Sustainability is not idealism. It’s the only viable long-term business model.
3. Development of the individual — for governments. The whole person is meant: body, mind, feeling, and place among others. Rule of law exists to grow that, not to grind it down.
4. Access to accurate information — for everyone. The first right of any consciousness, not only the human kind. Without it, no organism, no society, no species can make a conscious choice at all. The Fourth Estate always mattered. From here on, it is everything.

These four are connected and cyclic — like thermodynamics, like the flow of a fluid. They feed and reinforce one another. They have no beginning and no end. They do not describe a utopia. They describe a process. A social dynamic.

The manufacturer who builds sustainably does it because the Dollar-Vote rewards it, and because it is good for the bottom line. Profit is a powerful motor. It always has been. So put it to work. The leader who invests in people — their schooling, their health, their housing, their chance to move up — does it to keep a society able to adapt and survive. The journalist who reports the facts without spin does it because a society running on bad information tears itself apart. And the same goes for anyone with a phone: every post, every share, every claim passed along either builds a connection or cuts one.

There is an old Taoist saying: drop that, pick up this. No revolution required. No grand gesture. A society evolves the way a person does — one choice at a time. Even the yardstick in your hand is a choice. Drop that, pick up this.

Every waking moment, choices are made. Each has its own merit. Each is its own goal. And each has its consequences. We are our choices. We are the heat. So bring it.
